Riverside Intermediate operates on a modified block schedule. The Media Center is considered part of the core enrichment team along with PE, art and music that provide extra enrichment activities during extended lunch days.
This means that students can visit the Media Center in one of three ways:
(1) As part of the monthly enrichment schedule where students come to the library on a set schedule for lessons, center activities and check-out.
(2) As part of extended lunch where students may visit the library for D.E.A.R. time, maker space activities or structured computer time.
(3) Weekly visits in small groups to exchange books.
This hybrid arrangement is very different from the flexible schedule model that I've always worked under, but Ms. Harris, Ms. Dent and I are getting the hang of it. Center activities during lesson times will be tweaked according to student needs and curriculum focus at the time. Lessons are 40-60 minutes in length, depending on the schedule, but will always include a whole group activity (shared reading or library skills lesson) followed by computer/literacy center activities and check-out. If your child cherishes D.E.A.R. time, he or she always has the option to read silently during center activities.
